The Moongazer is a figure rooted primarily in Trinidad and Tobago folklore and is among the lesser internationally documented but deeply locally known supernatural figures of the island. He belongs to the tradition of crossroads spirits — entities that inhabit the threshold spaces between destinations — and reflects Caribbean communities’ deep relationship with road culture, night travel, and the spiritual significance of the moon.

Description & Appearance

The Moongazer is described as an exceptionally tall figure — some accounts say impossibly tall, stretching high into the night sky. He stands at crossroads or in the middle of roads with his arms stretched wide open to either side and his head tilted back, staring fixedly up at the moon. He is typically described as male, dark in appearance, and utterly still — almost statue-like. He does not speak, does not move from his position, and shows no awareness of those around him. He simply stands, arms wide, face to the moon.

Behaviour & How He Operates

The Moongazer does not chase. He does not call out. His danger is entirely passive — he stands in the road blocking passage and the threat is in what happens to travellers who attempt to pass beneath his outstretched arms. According to tradition, anyone who walks under his arms will be struck down — with illness, madness, severe misfortune, or death depending on the account. He appears on moonlit nights on lonely roads and crossroads.

• A figure standing absolutely still in the middle of a road or crossroads at night

• Arms outstretched to either side, face upturned toward the moon

• Complete silence — no insect sounds, no wind — in the area around him

• Moonlit nights on isolated roads are his primary operating conditions

How to Ward Him Off

• The only reliable approach is avoidance — do not attempt to pass him

• Turn back, take another route, or wait at a distance until he moves on

• Do not walk under his arms under any circumstances

• Prayers said at a safe distance are cited in some accounts as eventually causing him to move

How to Evade Him

There is no confrontation with the Moongazer — evasion is the only strategy. If you see him, stop where you are at a safe distance. Do not approach and do not attempt to squeeze past him. Wait. Some accounts say he eventually lowers his arms and moves on before dawn. Others say he remains until you choose another path.
